New Halfa: Vegetable Production
The Sudan Platform for Agriculture and Food Security (SPAFS) actively supports internally displaced persons (IDPs) in New Halfa by facilitating vegetable production initiatives aimed at strengthening food security for displaced families. Through the provision of seeds, tools, and technical training, SPAFS empowers IDPs to cultivate nutrient-rich vegetables on small plots of land, enhancing their access to fresh produce and improving their overall nutrition. This initiative not only promotes self-sufficiency among displaced households but also contributes to the stabilization of local food systems, ensuring that vulnerable families receive a sustainable supply of essential vegetables despite their challenging circumstances.
The Vegetables Farming Project successfully supported 500 displaced households (approximately 5,000 individuals) in New Halfa by transforming them into productive and self-reliant farmers. Implemented in 2024 across three target areas—Sugar Factory villages, Village 9, and Village 11—the project delivered remarkable achievements in food security, livelihood restoration, and women and youth empowerment.
The project not only enhanced food security and nutrition among displaced families but also contributed to restoring dignity, resilience, and economic empowerment in a conflict-affected region. Families who once depended on aid now produce food for their own consumption and income, creating a replicable model for future livelihood interventions in Sudan and beyond.
